Red Komodo - Continuous Autofocus Gimbal Test

I took my new Komodo for a spin today to focus on trying out the continuous autofocus on a gimbal. I was using the Ronin S, and shooting with Canon 35L II. The fact that we finally have some live autofocus on a Red cam is awesome, however, it's not entirely ideal quite yet, as it's continuous autofocus follows a pre determined spot in your frame, with no intelligent face or subject detection. The footage is gorgeous but the little micro jerks ewww...did you have the gimbal-stabilized properly? Overall it seems the AF appears to be slightly above GH5. Great video! Thank you for sharing.
Hey there! The weird pixel shifting is actually from the lens auto focusing. Because the camera does not utilize any intelligent focusing, like face detection. It uses spot focusing only, so any time the subject you want in focus moves out of the spot the lens will begin seeking focus on the new subject. This was just me testing this out. It’s not great, yet... hopefully they’ll continue to work on this. Now, I really only use the autofocus to spot focus at times. Otherwise I’m completely manual on my focus. It is helpful for on the fly gimbal work though, I wouldn’t recommend continuous though unless you were up close and personal with a subject.

looks great. Three questions. Would a variable ND fit in the filter you have. As in can it rotate? 2. Is the lens motorized for the autofocus to work? 3. At 6 K, how much storage does say a minute take up? Cheers.
Ryan, thank you so much for shooting this. I have been looking online for footage that is handheld and shows you how well the autofocus stacks up. Have you tried shooting completely manual focus with a cinema lens? Thank you, again.
Hey! Yes, I typically shoot all manual focus, and have for years! Most of my other videos are all manual focus, this is probably the only video I’ve posted with auto focus camera work. I can see how with using a gimbal, auto focus would be really cool, but I typically shoot handheld and love using manual lenses ;)
Its look like, you just take this gear make some test shots, and at final got a cinematic beatifull quality , just simple and amazing
AF is really not convincing, looks like it‘s 5 years behind Sony and the rest. If it weren‘t for that I‘d probably order it pretty soon

Great. But your you need to shoot in proper light and in weather where you will get less flares - because it’s hard to see focus on not In Lens flare, fast motion snd in low light

Hey thanks! I’ll definitely be doing some more controlled shooting with it soon. And I have a small hd monitor on back order, that will help with the gimbal shooting!!
